If you’re anything like me, you know that employees who feel valued are the ones who show up and produce the best results for their team. When leaders have the right training and are able to effectively lead their people, this usually falls into place.

The unfortunate reality is that the vast majority of leaders move into their roles without preparation. And teams struggle to keep their head above water while their leader is unable to effectively support them.

I experienced this for myself when I first moved into a leadership position at Ericsson. I started taking on increasing leadership responsibilities within a very short time, without receiving the necessary management training. I quickly realized that if I wanted to succeed, I had to ask for help. I began working with a coach, and for the first time, I felt that I had someone who was truly in my corner - someone to support me and help me develop the leadership skills I needed.

When I moved into a leadership position, I felt like I didn’t have an outlet, which is why coaching is so important. Like many of the junior leaders I work with, I was learning how to manage new responsibilities, and felt pressure to perform from day one. Coaching gave me the space I needed to discuss the challenges I was facing in my new role, and create a plan of action. As I moved into more senior leadership positions, my coach became a vital partner with whom I could talk through leadership situations to find the best outcomes.

When developing as a leader, it can make all the difference to have someone in your corner rooting for you to succeed and helping you develop the skills to get there. With the guidance of my coach, I found my leadership voice and learned how to lead effectively. During my 8 years as a project manager at Ericsson, I led numerous strategic telecom projects with high performing, remote teams. I managed Agile teams of up to 80 remote team members on software projects from prototyping to full-cycle product development to worldwide product release.

I owe a great deal of my success as a leader to the support and training I received from my executive coach, and I love giving that support to my clients everyday.
